Whygo2 Tallinn
Letsgo2 employees have travelled extensively to the destinations we feature. Here are the five main reasons they would consider a visit to Tallinn.
History and Culture
Tallinn is home to the best-preserved Medieval Old Town in Northern Europe which has been inscribed on UNESCOs World Heritage List. Churches and convents, passageways and courtyards, imposing merchants dwellings, shelters and parks give a sense of the true medieval spirit underlying the Old Town to this day. The Town Hall Square has functioned as a marketplace for centuries and today the square remains a cultural focal point for the city. In summer, it is filled with outdoor cafes and is home to countless open air concerts, handicraft fairs and medieval markets. In winter, an annual Christmas market enchants the crowds on the square, as does the towns Christmas tree, a tradition dating back to 1441. The Old Town is home to many of Tallinns most popular attractions. St.Olavs Church, one of the most imposing Gothic Churches of Medieval Europe, The Town Hall, the best preserved Town Hall in Northern Europe, The Town Wall, 2km of the wall with 26 defence towers have preserved from the 16th century when Tallinn boasted one of the most powerful and strongest defence systems in Northern Europe. The oldest functioning pharmacy in the world is located on the corner of Tallinns Town Hall Square.
Shopping
Roaming about Tallinns many streets you will find everything from unique local handicrafts to designer labels. Art boutiques and studios give a real taste of local handicraft. The medieval ambience is heightened by places like the workshops of Katarilina Guilds artists who work and sell their glasswork, ceramics, leather goods, quilts and more on the premises. However, haute couture is located not far away from the charm of local goods, with elegant boutiques both within the Old Town and nearby, in new shopping centres.
Activities
On the eastern side of Tallinn, the district of Pirita provides a sporting paradise with its sandy beaches, fresh air and plentiful sports facilities. Rowing boats, bikes and walking trails beneath the pine trees or along the seashore are all at hand. In addition sports stadiums and clubs, horse riding corrals, yacht harbours, golf courses, roller-skating rinks and go-cart racing arenas offer never ending possibilities for an active holiday.
Restaurants and Nightlife
The city is home to a wide array of dining venues, everything from inexpensive, cosy cafes that serve local fare to exclusive gourmet restaurants. Ethnic cuisine abounds in Tallinn with choices including Argentinean, Chinese, Georgian, Mexican and yes, even Medieval food but to name a few. At night the streets of Tallinn reawaken with the rhythm and rumble of the night. Whether you are looking for cosy pubs, wild clubs, or just a romantic drink, Tallinn has got it all. Most nightlife activity is contained in the area in and around Tallinns Old Town, giving visitors the chance to drift from bar to bar wandering through the ancient, lamp lit streets of Tallinn and enjoying the citys charm.
Pirita
Only 5km from Tallinns city centre is Pirita. Situated on the coast, it has beaches, pine forest parks and the picturesque Pirita river valley and is a favourite place for locals to spend their time. Pirita is also home to Tallinns Botanical Gardens and the Tallinn TV Tower which offers visitors a view over Tallinn and the Gulf of Finland from a 170 metre high platform.
